Marlou van de Braak

Managing Director – Trademarks, Novagraaf Netherlands | Amsterdam, The Netherlands

“There are plenty of opportunities to develop your career at Novagraaf. We’re expanding into new markets and the world is really at our feet. We’re always keen to find intelligent, hands-on and internationally-minded recruits, who can join us on this journey, whether they are beginning their careers or already specialists in their field.”

Marlou joined Novagraaf in January 2017 as key account director and member of Novagraaf’s management team. She has a background in intellectual property, media and advertising law, developed over 18 years as a lawyer at international firms De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek and Hoyng Rokh Monegier, and as the Head of Legal at the Dutch Media Authority. She is a frequent speaker on trademark and design issues at IP conferences.

Setting the strategy

The joy of moving from litigation into the role at Novagraaf is that it provides the opportunity to get involved much earlier in clients’ trademark strategies: to help them build an efficient portfolio and avoid potentially costly disputes, set up licensing programmes, get a return on investment from their IP, and take action against infringements so the business can continue without interruption. It’s also a very innovative firm to work for: we have international ambitions and are expanding, not just in Europe, but also into completely new markets, such as Japan, China and the US.

We have a great spread of clients from all kinds of industries and state-of-the-art IT. The experience and specialisms of the team are very broad: this enables us, in cooperation with our agent network, to provide clients with a ‘one-stop shop’ for all of their IP needs worldwide. That’s really important when it comes, for example, to ensuring that a company’s IP strategy is properly put in place in its key markets. Clients only need to tell us once, rather than having to brief different companies.

A broader view

In addition to my role as key account director for corporate clients, I manage a team of 15 trademark consultants and support staff, and try to be as active as I can organising or participating at IP industry events. I have 18 years experience in the profession, and enjoy bringing solutions to clients for all types of questions, from IP strategy to licence agreements, IP due diligence, and anti-counterfeiting and litigation strategies.

One of Novagraaf’s key goals is to partner with clients; effectively working as an extension of their IP team. We want to take the pressure off in-house departments by fully understanding their challenges, their needs and their vision for the future. We regularly second our specialists in-house, providing clients with on-the-ground IP support.

It’s also great that we are able to work as a network of offices: I really enjoy collaborating with my colleagues throughout Europe to bring solutions to their client needs too. IP is a very dynamic area of law, and corporate IP departments need their IP firms to be dynamic in the way that they provide their services and solutions too. This is something Novagraaf does really well.
