Copyright covers a wide area
We live in a world in which, every day, thousands of books are written, millions of photographs are taken, new art is created and new music is composed. But we also live in a world in which copyright is infringed and music is illegally downloaded.
A commonly recognised area of Intellectual Property
When talking about Intellectual Property, people often refer to copyright. For many, copyright is the most common form of Intellectual Property. The copyright symbol (©) is widely recognised, but how many people really understand when you are allowed to copy text (or other forms of Intellectual Property) and when you are not? For example, how much are you legally allowed to quote or paraphrase? All these questions are answered by copyright law.
Distribution of copyrighted works
The internet, in particular, has enabled the extremely fast distribution of text and music. These days, books and music are easily (illegally) copied and distributed online. Similarly, works of art and software programs are being increasingly imitated; for many consumers, they are indistinguishable from the real thing. In addition, their distribution is often fragmented, making the monitoring of counterfeit goods difficult. Without the appropriate resources, it is often impossible (as an individual) to keep track of copies of your work and identify who is responsible for its (illegal) distribution.
